How is Backblaze for Business different from Backblaze for Individuals?
The business plan and the personal plan both backup your files automatically and give you unlimited storage space for about $50 per year, per computer. The business plan differs by also offering central billing and reporting from the master account, while each employee hooked up to the system still has his own account where he can backup and restore data.
Backblaze can be used with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Intel-based Macintosh operating systems.
Files scheduled to be backed up are encrypted prior to transfer. The encrypted files are then safely transferred over a secure connection to the Backblaze data center where they are still encrypted and stored on a protected disk. The company uses a combination of industry standard private, public and symmetrical encryption methods to keep files secure. All of this is done invisibly and automatically. This means that when you create your account a private, unique key is automatically generated to protect your data within the system.
Easy to Use
Installing the program only requires an email address and a password. Once you have completed this, Backblaze begins to back everything up automatically.
Backblaze backs data up continuously, because a computer crash or power failure can happen at any time, so you never have to worry about losing your most recent changes, new files or recently uploaded photos.
Backups are Fast and Efficient
Backblaze has developed a unique ‘single-read’ engine to ensure your computer doesn’t slow down while the system works in the background. The automatic throttle makes the most efficient use of your internet connection. With a typical home connection, you can back up about 2 – 4 GB per day.
For enhanced efficiency files are de-duplicated, compressed, and backed up in increments. This means that if you have the same photo stored twice, Backblaze recognizes this and only backs up one copy. When you restore this photo, it will be returned to both original locations. Large files are compressed whenever possible and only the most recent changes to a file is backed up.
Deleted files can be recovered within 30 days.
Backblaze uses cloud restore when you want your data restored. This method simplifies the restoration process. This means that if your computer crashes and you buy a new hard drive or you upgrade to a new computer and want your old files back, you simply log in to your account and request to have your data restored, without reinstalling the program. This works because your files are decrypted on the secure server, zipped and then sent to you over a secure connection. Once it arrives, you just unzip the files and all of your data is now on your new hard drive.
You can add extra protection to your account by using a passphrase. Backblaze will use this passphrase to encrypt the private key generated when you signed up. You are responsible for keeping this passphrase private and to remember what it is, because there is no way for anyone, including employees of the company to decrypt, and thereby restore, your data without this passphrase. Unlike the “forgot password” mechanism offered by other secure sites, your passphrase can not be retrieved in this way, because Backblaze does not know your passphrase.
Restoring your data with a passphrase is similar to a regular restore, except a few extra steps are needed. To decrypt your stored data, you will need to enter your passphrase on the company’s secure website. It is passed to the company data center over a secure connection where it is used to decrypt your private key, which is then used to decrypt your data. Backblaze never saves your passphrase on a disk or anywhere else, and it is discarded once it is used. Just like with a regular restore, once the data is decrypted on the secure restore servers, it is zipped and sent over an encrypted SSL connection to your computer. You can then unzip and have all of your files back on your computer.
